    Two snowboarders were buried and killed by a massive avalanche which swept down a steep slope in upper Big Cottonwood Canyon.     An avalanche swept down a slope above the town of Alta, coming to rest against the Peruvian Lodge. The slide buried the parking lot in 16 feet of snow and damaged several cars. There were no injuries.

    Strong southwest winds gusting to 66 mph (57 kts) near Wahweap and 60 mph (52 kts) at the St. George Airport caused some damage. The airport was closed after a wind gust caused the landing gear to collapse on a taxiing plane. There were no injuries. Other damage in the area included a blown-off roof, a blown-out window at Dixie college, and a business sign being torn off and damaging a nearby car.

    Mother Nature once again was kind to the Winter Olympics, bringing a mostly dry cold front into the Wasatch Front...but not until after the closing ceremonies. The front brought gusty winds and a little snow to the valleys, with heavier snow in the Cottonwood Canyons. Alta picked up 14 more inches of powder, with Snowbird and Solitude tallying 7 inches.

The highway was closed for 2 hours, but there were no injuries. Snowfall amounts included 10 inches at Brian Head, 7 inches at Elk Meadows, and 5 inches at Fremont Junction.

    An avalanche claimed the life of a 29-year-old Heber City man. The avalanche occurred in the Western Uinta Mountains east of Oakley, near Windy Ridge. Six people were skiing in two separate groups when a 5-foot-deep snow slab broke off from the slope above just before 2 pm. The victim was buried under 4 feet of snow for 15 minutes before being dug out. He died of massive head and neck trauma, not

Locations are NOAA's own county and National Weather Service forecast-zone names, which is why you will see both Salt Lake and Wasatch Mountains South of I-80. A storm not listed here was not necessarily absent β€” it means NOAA has no recorded report for it, which is common for isolated hail.
