    At the beginning of the month of October, the US Drought Monitor analyzed an area of Extreme (D3) Drought conditions as covering roughly 1% of the zone, with 70% of the zone under severe (D2) Drought conditions, and the remaining 29% under Moderate (D1) Drought conditions. With the 10/14 Drought Monitor update, Extreme (D3) Drought was completely removed, with 95% of the zone now under Severe (D2)

With the 9/17 Drought Monitor update, all areas of Extreme (D3) Drought conditions were removed, with 100% of the zone under Severe (D2) Drought conditions.

By the end of the month, areas of Extreme (D3) Drought were analyzed across the eastern Uinta Basin, surrounded by Severe (D2) Drought conditions.   7. Dust StormEastern Uinta Basin

    The KVEL ASOS at Vernal Airport in Vernal, UT recorded sustained winds 25-40 mph, with gusts upward of 60 mph. Thanks to ongoing drought conditions, there was plenty of loose soil and dust to be picked up by strong winds like these, and indeed the KVEL ASOS recorded a half hour period of visibility reduced below 1/2 mile. No reports of impacts due to this dust storm were received.

    The Vernal CWOP site, which is on the west side of town, recorded a gust to 64 mph at 4:40 PM MDT. A gust to 57 mph also was recorded at this site at 5:50 PM MDT. Both these gusts are likely the result of non-convective enhancement from nearby precipitation. No reports of injuries, damages, or fatalities were received.

  9. High WindEastern Uinta Basin63 mph gust (measured)

    The Utah Department of Transportation road mesonet sensor US-40 MP 140 Asphalt Ridge recorded a peak wind gust to 63 mph at 3:30 PM MDT on the 13th. The KVEL ASOS in Vernal recorded a peak gust to 51 mph, while other recorded wind gust across the zone fell into the 45-63 mph range. No reports of injuries, damages, or fatalities were received.

  10. High WindEastern Uinta Basin72 mph gust (measured)

    The Vernal CWOP site on the west side of the city of Vernal recorded two wind gusts at or above 58 mph. The first gust, to 58 mph, occurred at 1:20 PM MDT, and the second gust, to 72 mph, occurred at 6:10 PM MDT. These were the only two gusts to reach this strength in the area on this day. No reports of injuries, damages, or fatalities were received.

Where NOAA lists a wind speed in knots we show it in miles per hour; everything else is verbatim.

Locations are NOAA's own county and National Weather Service forecast-zone names, which is why you will see both Salt Lake and Wasatch Mountains South of I-80. A storm not listed here was not necessarily absent β€” it means NOAA has no recorded report for it, which is common for isolated hail.
